Starbreeze Buys Rights to Classic Videogames Including Defenders of the Crown

Starbreeze Studios is aiming to cover all bases of virtual reality (VR) production, in both hardware with its StarVR head-mounted display (HMD) in development, and content with its recent partnership with IMAX. The studio is now expanding its horizons with its latest venture into adapting videogames now that it has bought classic Cinemaware titles.

The Swedish independent publisher, creator, and distributor has now acquired the right of Cinemaware’s library of titles, including the likes of Defender of the Crown, a strategy-based classic videogame released in the late 80s, as well as Wings, considered one of the best titles for Amiga where players take flight in 3D dog fights.

Starbreeze Studios has given the full list of all the titles that it has acquired in this move forward in the VR space:

The Cinemaware brand
Defender of the Crown
The King of Chicago
Sinbad and the Throne of the Falcon
Lords of the Rising Sun
Rocket Ranger
It Came from the Desert
It Came from the Desert II: Antheads
TV Sports: Basketball
TV Sports: Baseball
TV Sports: Boxing
TV Sports: Football
TV Sports: Hockey

The studio isn’t shy of its wealth and worth as it has been shared that the titles were all bought for a total of €525,000 EUR – in cash.
“Defender of the Crown is one of the games that made me and many others at Starbreeze go into the gaming industry all those years ago. For many, Cinemaware set the bar for fun and immersive gaming in the ATARI and AMIGA-era. For us, as a developer, it will be a pleasure to re-energize and bring these great brands into the new era of VR and other platforms,” said Bo Andersson Klint, Starbreeze CEO. “The classic Cinemaware games are concepts that still in this day are epic imaginations. We will make them excel in excellent VR-experiences at our location based IMAX centers.”
The implementation of these title won’t be immediate as they will be used as a a stored resource for Starbreeze Studios, and they will be “selectively used”.
