PlayStation VR Dominates as Sony Reveals More Than 2 Million Sold Worldwide

Ever since Sony Interactive Entertianment (SIE) launched the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD), the device has proven to be popular among PlayStation 4 owners. Recently technology market analyst firm Canalys reported more than 490,000 PlayStation VR’s were sold in Q3 2017. Today, SIE has released its sales figures, showcasing that PlayStation VR is doing phenomenally well.
Estimated sales figures from SIE show that PlayStation VR cumulatively sold through more than 2 million units to consumers worldwide as of 3rd December, 2017. Headset sales have likely been buoyed by the continued success of PlayStation 4, which has cumulatively sold through more than 70.6 million units to consumers worldwide.

Additionally, SIE has said 150 titles have been released for PlayStation VR, achieving more than 12.2 million copies sold at retail stores globally and through digital downloads on PlayStation Store as of 3rd December, 2017. There’s also more than 130 videogames and other content currently in development for the headset states the company, all due to be released by the end of 2018.
“We are delighted that so many people are enjoying the unique entertainment proposition of PlayStation 4 and that an emerging technology like PlayStation VR continues to gain traction,” said Andrew House, Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment in a statement. “I cannot thank our fans and partners enough. Their support, since the launch of very first PlayStation in 1994, has helped to make PlayStation one of the biggest console gaming networks in the world. We will continue to work closely with partners to maintain this momentum and remain steadfast in making PS4 the best place to play.”
Whilst these sales figures are estimated by SIE, they do give the best indication yet on the actual consumer base of PlayStation VR. Sales of the headset would have likely increased recently due to SIE’s aggressive sales strategy for the festive period, especially over the Black Friday weekend. Also helping to attract consumers will be exclusive titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, as well as multi-platform content like DOOM VFR.
With so many headsets on the market that sort of customer base will also ensure developers are more likely to create VR experiences either specifically, or at least supporting PlayStation VR. For the latest PlayStation VR updates, keep reading VRFocus.
