Virtual reality (VR) has been demonstrated on numerous occasions the possibilities it provides for training and educational needs across a gamut of industries and professions. The latest example comes from innovation studio XXII with a VR and augmented reality (AR) lab dubbed VAL (Virtual Augmented Laboratory).
Designed to help participants conduct chemical experiments, VAL incorporates both VR and AR by getting users to perform a collaborative virtual chemistry experiment by manipulating real 3D-printed beakers and an interactive Bunsen burner to mix chemicals and heat them up.
Demonstrated at Laval Virtual, a VR focused event in France, users are guided by an instructor who uses a Tango powered smartphone to see into the virtual world and help them when needed. The system uses HTC Vive head-mounted displays (HMDs) while the motion controllers are place inside the various containers that need to be moved and poured. The trainer can also correct items that users have manipulated.
While the whole process is fun, engaging and intuitive, the demo aims to highlight how these immersive technologies can be used for learning in realistic but safe environments. Trainees can combine theory and practice in one location, with multiple participants, and technically the teacher could be teaching the class remotely if needed.
