Legendary Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Officially Remade for VR

Capcom’s Street Fighter II: The World Warrior is one of the most well known videogames in the history of the medium. In addition to the series of sequels, the videogame spawned nearly a dozen revised editions including Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition, Super Street Fighter II: New Challengers, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and most recently Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers on Nintendo Switch. And now, a virtual reality (VR) edition can be added to that list. Sort of.

This coming weekend will play host to the next Capcom Pro Tour North American Finals at Red Bull Battle Grounds, taking place at The Castle in Boston on 18th – 19th November 2017. As the Street Fighter franchise celebrates its 30th Anniversary, the competition has evolved from local arcade meetups to multi-day national events like Red Bull Battle Grounds, which will crown the top Street Fighter V player in North America.
With so many iterations of the videogame and technology evolving over three decades, Capcom has decided to take the leap and offer gamers the chance to jump inside the videogame for the first time. The iconic Street Fighter II: The World Warrior bonus stage in which the player races against time to smash a car to smithereens – itself a homage to Capcom’s earlier fighting franchise, Final Fight – will now be playable on the HTC Vive at the event. Players must destroy a car using your fists, attempting to get as many points as possible before the countdown ends.
Built using HTC Vive and the recently released Vive Trackers, the Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality experience is currently only set to be available during the competition. No information on a consumer release – nor any in-game assets – is currently available.

In addition to having Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality available to play, Red Bull will be hosting a contest for the experience. Those who participate will be entered into a sweepstakes to win at HTC Vive, amongst other prizes. More information on the contest can be found on the rules page on the official website.
Capcom has seen significant success in VR thus far, with Resident Evil VII biohazard continuing to impress on PlayStation VR. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality, including any potential for a future consumer release.
