If want to know how to do VR horror right, look no further than A Chair in a Room: Greenwater for the HTC Vive. Indie developer Wolf & Wood’s excellent chiller remains one of the best games on the platform, and today the studio is ready to tease its next project.
Though the developer isn’t revealing a name for the game just yet, it has provided the first few details and screenshots to Upload VR. Studio director Ryan Bousfield explained that it is making a “series of short stories”, this time for Gear VR. These stories will highlight VR’s potential to become the “ultimate empathy machine.”
“You (the player) will be taking part in an experimental procedure that will use the headset to transport you into the subconscious of some of the most troubled and tortured minds,” Bousfield revealed. “Each patient will deliver a dark psychological experience in the Wolf & Wood trademark style. “
Below you can see the first screenshots, not too dissimilar from the developer’s previous release with a cold, clinical style. Keep an eye out on the developer’s Twitter for more updates. Based on the developer’s other tweets, there might be some other projects for other platforms in the works, too.
There isn’t much more to go on right now, but if A Chair in a Room is anything to go by it will be worth the wait. “I spent about 3 hours tip-toeing my way through the story and still get goosebumps when I think about the things I saw on my adventure,” Upload VR’s David Jagneaux said in our 8/10 review. “You’ll experience your fair share of jump scares throughout the experience, that’s for sure, but it’s the stalking dread and terror permeating the world as a whole that will truly chill you to the bone. A Chair in a Room: Greenwater is a wonderful proof of concept for utilizing room scale VR technology to the fullest in a methodical horror setting.”
