Way back in 2016, developer Revival Productions launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of the 6 degrees-of-freedom action shooter Overload. The campaign met its goal, and since then backers and interested parties have been awaiting the release of the title. The waiting is now over, as Overload is available on Steam.
Revival Productions conceived the title as a spiritual successor to 90’s shooter Descent, which much of the same team involved in Overload as previously worked on Descent, which should result in an authentic experience for Descent fans.
The release contains more than fifteen full-size levels in the single-player campaign, along with over 20 different robot enemy types and three challenging bosses. There is also a single-player challenge modes with Infinite and Countdown variants. The Single player mode comes with a story created by the writer of Freespace 2.
The multiplayer allows for up to eight players to engage each other in customised ships which can be modified with different weapons and other enhancements. There are ten multiplayer levels available, and players can choose between ranked or private matches. For old-school players there is the option for LAN play, with one PC acting as dedicated server.
Overload has support for multiple different control options, including mouse and keyboard, gamepad, joystick and keyboard, the latter of which is recommended by the development team.
The title is compatible with HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, and has surround sound audio options to make the music composed by Dan Wentz, Allister Brimble and Jerry Berlongieri into a more immersive experience alongside the visuals.
The development team are taking suggestions for improvements and bug fixes from the Steam community, and there are plans for a custom level editor to be released in the coming months.
Overload is priced at £23.79 (GBP), though users can buy the title along with its official soundtrack for £26.33, which equates to a discount of 15%. Further information can be found on the Steam Store page.
As usual, VRFocus will bring you the latest on new VR videogames, software and hardware.
